Quotations

"Contrary to the traditional arts, the player's experience is strictly personal and generally cannot be verified. It depends on the actual viewing and interacting with the artwork. "

Gardiner, Hazel. eds. Digital Art History. Portland: Intellect, 2004 (p.62)

"If and when you interact, you interact with the whole of the work and the navigation is part of the content."

"Interactive art is still most often seen in the context of the computer world (e.g. Siggraph art show) or the festivals and institutions dedicated to bridging the gap between art, technology and design (e.g. Ars Electronica in Linz, Austria). "

"Processing is very fast at manipulating data on-the-fly, especially with regard to input from video cameras. To recreate the same effect in a different tool such as Flash would be very difficult. "

Processing: Maths to Art in One Simple Step

Why this topic interests me ......

As 20th century is a turning point for digital world, many artworks such as animation and video
depend on the help of the high-tech very much. It seems many things would have become
impossible without digital media. Yet, there are problems initiated by its existence, such as the
problems of ownership and copyright. On the positive side, there are softwares free for
download, just like Processing. So that it makes more individuals to be artists. It is interesting to
note that judging the pros and cons in using digital media for artworks can be quite difficult. I
found Processing quite interesting, as I noticed those artworks created by Takashi Maekawa
using this software are pretty impressive -- well drawn graphics and smooth animation. Besides,
it has some adventages that Flash does not have. It may be a great discovery that Processing
will replace many other softwares and become the most important digital tool in producing
digital artworks in the future. For interactive art, it is usually said to be a modern form of art. It
is connotated with initiation and creativity. Although the history of interactive digital art is not
very long, it is surely has its importance in modern age , as it the addition of "digital" to the
"interactive". It will be a interesting topic to explore its development.
